According to IHS Screen Digest Mobile Media Intelligence Service, making apps free is actually the best way to make money off of them. The end of 2011’s 3rd quarter showed that “free” apps made up 45% of the iPhone App Store’s highest grossing apps and 31% of Android Market’s. This shows that although free downloads are most popular, people are willing to shell out money for them once they’re acquired. That money is often spent on in-app purchases like virtual currency, additional features or special in-game items. This data from the IHS was focusing on smartphone users. As for iPad, their biggest selling apps are mostly media content such as newspapers or magazines.
